2018: New Year, New Goals (What Are Yours?)

New year

It’s 2018! Can you believe it? With a new year comes new goals…have you made your 2018 goals yet? If so, I would love to hear them. When it comes to Life After Lust, I’ve created some ambitious yet attainable goals. I expect 2018 to be a year of amazing opportunities and growth. I will work hard to create such a year.

If you’re interested, here are my 2018 writing & business goals:

  1. Produce & publish the Life After Lust Audiobook
  2. Disperse all Audiobook Kickstarter rewards
  3. Create Life After Lust online course or program
  4. Write & publish book #2 (A workbook or Life After Lust Volume 2)
  5. VLOG monthly
  6. Life After Lust Retreat or Intensive
  7. Weekly engagement in the Life After Lust Community Facebook Group
  8. Expand distribution of all formats of Life After Lust
  9. At least one paid speaking opportunity per month (check out the Life After Lust Tour!)
  10. Reach 4,000 copies of Life After Lust in circulation (all formats combined)

As I’ve connected more with myself and watched the impact of Life After Lust, I’ve realized that the career I most want to pursue is that of a writer/author (I will still be a therapist). This year, I plan to move more seriously in that direction. I look forward to sharing more with you as that journey unfolds.

Wishing you success with your most important goals this year.
Happy New Year!

Surrendering to Structure – Life After Lust VLOG Episode

Surrendering to the Need for Structure in Recovery

About 2 weeks ago I came to two humbling realizations:

1) I was fatter than ever
2) I needed structure in order to take my health seriously

Around that time a friend invited me to join a fitness challenge. I have found this highly structured with high accountability approach to be exactly what I needed and I have thrived as a result.

What about you? Are you naturally self-disciplined or do you need external structure to achieve your goals?

This morning on my walk I shared about this topic in my newest VLOG called Surrendering to the Need for Structure in Recovery. I hope you find this video insightful and encouraging as you strive to achieve those things that mean most to you.

Seeking out structure doesn’t mean we are weak. If anything, it means we understand our needs and are courageous enough to get them met in a ways that strengthen and support us.

May we all find the structure we need to thrive.

Have a great weekend.

Fighting Lust with Love: How to Honor, Not Objectify

Fighting Lust with love

Lust is my drug of choice. This has been true for me since adolescence. It helped me cope with life’s challenges but in the end brought many more. Now that I’m in recovery, fighting lust is a daily ideal. Some days are better than others, but I continue to aim for this attainable achievement.

A few days ago I took on a personal challenge, practicing a technique that boosted my ability to fight lust through actively honoring others. I told this story and explained the technique in more detail in my newest VLOG called “Fighting Lust with Love: How to Honor, Not Objectify.”  Click here to watch it and learn more about this powerful tool.

These efforts will all be worth it. As I wrote in my book, “For those ready for recovery, it is time to abandon life under the influence of lust. It is time to lay down our cheap coping mechanisms, taking up strategies that strengthen us. As we leave lust behind, we begin to see ahead the hopeful makings of a new life. We begin to taste the unrivaled satisfaction of life after lust” (Benedict, 2017).

To learn more strategies for battling lust, porn, and sex addiction I invite you to check out my book Life After Lust. Thank you for reading, watching, and joining me in this life-changing adventure.

Angry Birds & Killer Bees: Talking to Your Kids About Sex (Video Interview)

Screen Shot 2017-09-15 at 2.26.37 PM

Talking to kids about sex is an essential, yet difficult task for all parents. What complicates this challenge further is the advancement of technology and the early exposure to pornography that is rampant in our day and age.

Last year I had the privilege of interviewing Dr Todd Bowman, therapist and author of Angry Birds, Killer Bees: Talking to Your Kids About Sex, addressing this timely topic. This valuable interview is now a part of our SATP certification program and I am privileged to share it publicly today for the first time. Whether you are a parent yourself or plan to be, you’ll gain greatly from Dr Bowman’s expertise with this topic. I invite you to share this interview and Dr Bowman’s much-needed book with others (Subscribe here for future videos and vlogs).

Here’s the interview:

Please share with important message with others.

The Humbling Road to Rebuilding Trust in Recovery (Life After Lust VLOG Episode)

Rebuilding Trust VLOG

“She deserves a husband who is trustworthy, both when she is looking and when she’s unaware” (Life After Lust p.40, from the chapter What My Wife is Worth).

Unfortunately, many of us recovering from sex addiction have made past choices that have broken down the trust of those we love most. In active recovery, we learn how to live out a trust-building lifestyle. In my new Life After Lust VLOG episode called The Humbling Road to Rebuilding Trust in Recovery, I share some ways that I am working to rebuild trust in my relationship with my wife. For further study, here’s another great video with 8 additional ideas for rebuilding trust.

What ways are you rebuilding trust in your closest relationships?

May we all be willing to embody humility, working hard to be the trustworthy people our partners deserve. They are worth our best efforts.
And so are we.

Am I Screwing Up My Kids? (Thoughts from a Parent in Recovery) – VLOG

Am I screwing up my kids?

The more I learn about the origins of sexual addiction, the more I see how factors in childhood play a significant role. This helps me understand myself as a recovering addict but as a parent this responsibility can be frightening. If you’ve ever wondered, like me, what impact your parenting may have on the future of your children, then check out my recent Life After Lust VLOG entitled “Am I Screwing Up My Kids (Thoughts from a Parent in Recovery).”

If you’ve read my book Life After Lust, you’ve seen that learning to parent well is another essential recovery skill. To learn more about the challenge to engage in proactive and intentional parenting check out the powerful video “Dear Porn: A Father’s Letter” (another chapter in Life After Lust).

May we all be empowered to be better parents as we learn from the mistakes of our parents and our own mistakes as well. There is hope for all of us on this journey, no matter how old our children may be.
