Hating Addiction Won’t Heal It: An IFS Perspective

Hating addiction won’t heal it. Hating it will only make it worse. In Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, addiction is treated much differently. I encourage you to watch the following video clips from my recent Moral Combat podcast interview on The Power of IFS to learn about the addictive parts of us (called Firefighters).

Believe it or not, these parts are trying to help us in their own way. Yes, they cause damage in the process of putting out the fire of our pain. But reacting to them with anger, hate, criticism, shaming, and control will only lead to more shame. The internal battle will only escalate.

To learn how to relate to addictive parts in a way that ends the inner war and leads to long-term healing, I encourage you to reach out to me. Using IFS, I can guide you in getting to know the parts of you that you have learned to hate. I can help you heal the pain that addictive parts are trying to help you manage. I can help you individually and in my IFS focused recovery group.

Healing is possible. The path to it is paved with curiosity and compassion. Self-hate won’t get you where you want to go. Only self-love will.

In compassionate support,
