WTF Do We Do Now? Finding Strength & Self-Compassion After the Election

In the wake of the election results, it’s natural to feel a whirlwind of emotions: terror, rage, heartbreak, even a crushing sense of despair.

For many, this season’s results have brought painful reminders that issues like sexism, racism, white supremacy, transphobia, and homophobia are still deeply embedded within our society. It can be devastating to see how many people support systems that are so unsafe to so many. And for those who have been hurt by certain belief systems, especially those that use religion as a justification for intolerance, it’s even more disheartening to realize that damaging ideologies remain alive and well.

In times like these, when it feels as though the world is not a safe place, your feelings are entirely valid. Today, those emotions deserve space, compassion, and understanding. It’s natural to feel crushed, afraid, and that the world isn’t safe, especially when the systems meant to protect us seem to fail so many. If these events have shaken your trust, your sense of stability, or your faith in the future, know that you’re not alone in feeling this way. These feelings connect us to our values, to what matters most.

As I processed the emotions and implications of this day, I found this poem especially encouraging:

It’s when the earth shakes
And foundations crumble
That our light is called
To rise up.

It’s when everything falls away
And shakes us to the core
And awakens all
Of our hidden ghosts

That we dig deeper to find
Once inaccessible strength.
It’s in times when division is fierce
That we must reach for each other

And hold each other much
Much tighter.
Do not fall away now.
This is the time to rise.

Your light is being summoned.
Your integrity is being tested
That it may stand more tall.
When everything collapses

We must find within us
That which is indomitable.
Rise, and find the strength in your heart.
Rise, and find the strength in each other

Burn through your devastation,
Make it your fuel.
Bring forth your light.
Now is not the time
To be afraid of the dark.

Chelan Harkin

These words remind us that even in our most fearful moments, we each carry a light that is indomitable. It’s natural to feel like retreating in times when the world feels hostile or unstable. But beneath all of the hurt and fear, there is a strength in each of us that cannot be extinguished. Now, more than ever, is the time to bring forth our light, to make our inner compassion our guide, and to rise.

When the world feels unsafe, self-connection and self-compassion are crucial. Take the time to connect inwardly (like with this or this), to feel what you need to feel, to express what you need to express, to connect with your compassionate Self, creating safety within, even when the outside world feels threatening. Notice what you’re feeling, without judgment. Embrace your sadness, rage, or grief as powerful reminders of your empathy and your values. Get support from others who understand and care.
