Self-Care & Synchrony: My Podcast Interview with Geoff Steurer

Funny story. My friend and fellow sexual addiction expert Geoff Steurer invited me to be a guest on his podcast and we hadn’t yet nailed down a date or topic. After Christmas, my family headed out of town before me and I got in my car with my dog, ready for the long drive ahead. Minutes later, Geoff reached out to me and said he happened to be in the studio right then and wondered if I would consider recording our episode. In a spirit of spontaneity and synchronicity, we agreed to record the podcast interview on the spot. Seriously, what were the chances we would both be available and I would have a car without kids and plenty of uninterrupted time to talk? We agreed on the topics of self-care in recovery and group work in recovery and what followed was a conversation packed with practical recovery wisdom. I truly believe that our choice to go with the flow was a gift to both us and our listeners. I love that we trusted the process because the message that emerged was both natural and powerful.

If you’re in recovery, I hope you’ll invest half an hour in listening to this valuable message. It is a frank discussion about the necessity of self-care in recovery, touching of topics of boundaries, relationship with self and one’s partner, the Evil Genius, prelapse, habits, shame, and self-worth. If you’ve read Life After Lust, you’ll know that self-care is a theme that I emphasized throughout. In her endorsement, sexual addiction recovery pioneer Marnie Ferree pointed this out, saying that my “framework of ‘mindset, mastery, and mission’ goes beyond the familiar principles of recovery to focus extensively on self-care in a way that’s lacking in most resources.”

Self-care, or lack thereof, can make or break someone’s recovery. It is my hope that female and male recovering sex & pornography addicts will listen to this podcast and feel empowered to take their recovery to the next level.
